  • Teach an tSolais - The Lighthouse, situated at Rinnaróis, a placename which translates frankly to a double meaning.

Rinn meaning = Headland, a' = 'of the' Róis refers to Rose, the Sea Pinks or Thrift;

The ground in early summer is furnished with a pink carpet of sea pink flowers.

Róis also means = 'Blast', relating to the powerful booming noise the Atlantic Ocean creates when she finally confronts the cliff face and sea stacks beneath the Lighthouse, after many miles of vast, open sea momentum.

The Lighthouse on the North face of the Island was built in 1798 at the height of the Irish Revolution and now stands at 23 metres in height with a range of 27 nautical miles.

The Ballast Board took over Thomas Rogers' project in 1810 and the Lighthouse underwent considerable upgrades until 1824. The Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1832 when the Tory Island Lighthouse was established. In 1859 due to large scale protests , the Lighthouse was reopened to offer mariners a safe passage around the coast.

The conversion of the light to electrical operation with an improvement in range to 29 nautical miles was made in in the winter of 1953.

2 white flashes with 20 second intervals is Arranmore's signature.  The Lighthouse changed to automatic operation in 1976 and the two Light House Keepers and their families were made redundant on 1st August 1976.
