Inish bofin = Inis Bó Finne

 

In English it translates to White Cow Island. 

This Island is a short boat trip from Magheroarty pier.

Explore the caves, sea arches and a beautiful white sandy beach. There is a Chapel and an old school house on the Island. Gaeilge , Irish is the first language of the local community here.

Other points of interest

  • Arthur Kingsley Porter's cottage. Arthur, an American Millionaire, vanished from the island without trace but with much speculation, in 1933. He was a Harvard professor and the owner of Glenveagh Castle. 

  • The Artist's hut - in 1982, Neal McGregor, an English artist came to Inis Bó Finne and lived here at Gob Char’ a’ Ghlasáin, where you can still see his images of salmon, lobster and a seagull carved into stone. He lived here for 8 years and died suddenly in his hut, in July 1990.

  • The house that Constable Charlie McGee lived in. He was the first RIC casualty of the 1916 Rising.

  • Scoilt na hAltóra: Where people would say mass/prayers during penal times.

  • The White Stone: Situated in the middle of the island. It has links with the story of the white cow (Boffin Ferry Donegal 2023).
